Dr. Anita R. Exley, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

DR. ANITA R. EXLEY (she/her/hers)

I have been a licensed psychologist for 27 years.  My early training and experience include specialization in working with children, primarily through play therapy.  I work with adults, teens and children ages 3 and up, and their families.  My areas of focus include but are not limited to PTSD, grief/loss, spirituality, childhood concerns, LGBTQ+ support and general emotional concerns.

I see therapy as a team effort.  Together we identify your strengths and interests and use those to work on areas in your life that are not going the way you would like.  It takes a certain degree of courage to take the first step to start therapy (even checking out this website!), and it can be hard work, but I hope you will feel supported and nurtured through this process.

I have specialized training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).  This is helpful for people who have gone through a trauma--whether it is a single event or many experiences.  EMDR also can be very useful for people who feel "stuck" in negative beliefs about themselves and for people who feel that they are not making progress in therapy.  My experience in clinical hypnosis is another resource.  This approach allows a person to get in touch with their inner wisdom in order to heal.

At this point in my career, I don't have a single approach that I use consistently.  After carefully listening to what is on your mind and heart, I get a sense of what strategies (drawn from my experience and continued training) may be the best fit for you, and together, we get to work on that plan.

I feel honored every time someone trusts me to help them with their personal concerns.  My goal is to provide an experience that is safe, caring, respectful, and empowering.

Dr. Exley obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Mount Union in 1987.  She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The University of Toledo in 1994 and became a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Ohio in 1995.
