Trauma Focused Therapy

Upsetting events happen in life. Sometimes our brain can get stuck in rehashing the memory of an event--big or small--as if it is still in the present. We may have nightmares or repeated thoughts about what happened. In these situations, trauma-focused therapy can help the brain to process these memories. Trauma focused therapy techniques include expressing feelings through art or drawing and learning skills to calm the body.

A specific form of therapy for trauma is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This method does not involve extensive talk about the event. Instead, this often quicker process involves helping the brain to neutralize the memory and shift it into the past.

The goal of any of these techniques is to improve your ability to cope with stress.
